Have you ever just gotten to work and needed to take a nap because the commute just drained you? I have been feeling that way the past couple days because of the snow storm that hit the Twin Cities and the freezing temperatures. Traffic into St. Paul has been horrendous. And I have been trapped behind a slow fool coming out of Hastings both days, which just sets the tone for the rest of the commute, which I usually don’t mind. I was happy that last night I was able to leave work early for a doctor’s appointment, because I guess Hwy 52 was packed and dangerous to navigate.

Had a dream last night where the Packers beat the Vikings next week, then went on to win the Super Bowl. Can’t tell if it was a nightmare or a good dream. The Vikes are talented this year, but their track record of choking during important games doesn’t bode well for them making it to Miami. But, if the Packers win this weekend, they will play the Vikings and the Vikes have already beaten them twice this year. Of course, that could just set up the Packers for the perfect win this season and show that they do not need Favre to make it to the playoffs or even the SuperBowl. Either way, this playoff season is going to be fun to watch.

I am not a violent person. But rude people irritate me. If I leave you a message and / or a text concerning your son, please get back to me if only to tell me you got the message and you are working on an answer.  Things like this make me angry and frustrate me and leaks into other areas of my life. Like my ability to create a new design for a shawl. Yes, I have misplaced anger issues. But I’d rather destroy an inanimate object instead of going to jail. Enough of this – writing about it will only get me so far.

Just finished reading One Good Knight by Mercedes Lackey – one of my favorite authors. She was the first fantasy writer I had read and have been hooked on the genre ever since. Misty, as her fans call her, started writing a new series, Five Hundred Kingdoms, which has each book dealing with a fairy tale or idea behind a fairy tale, and making them, well, almost modern. The stories are still set in fairy tale times (long ago, far away), but take traditionally helpless women (Cinderella, Little Mermaid, helpless virgin sacrifice) and allows them to go either against or with traditional storylines to better their futures. Godmothers, elves, dragons, sorcerers, witches, champions – all take a heady lead in these stories. I enjoyed the first book of the series, The Fairy Godmother, which introduces the audience to Elena, who was destined to be a Cinderella-type character with the wicked stepmother and stepsisters, but whose prince was a child. Instead, Elena becomes a Godmother, a mystical being in charge of the Kingdoms and who watches the various storylines to make sure Tradition is either followed (leading to happy endings) or completely broken and redirected (to avoid bad endings).

In One Good Knight, the story focuses on Princess Andromeda, a plain princess whose capital city is being ravaged by a dragon. The way Misty circumvents Tradition and re-writes the story of the virgin sacrifice is nothing short of artistry. I don’t want to give anything away, but if you like fairy tales, you will love the series. I wasn’t as fond of the other 2 books in the series, Fortune’s Fool and The Snow Queen, but I’m hoping Misty’s next endeavor into this world mirrors her first 2 attempts.

Started watching Battlestar Galactica last night. I was half expecting to be bored by it, because of all the hype from friends and family. But, I am pretty interested in it. Looks good. So, I guess I found another series to watch. Darn.

Taco burgers were a success tonight. I think I can manage cooking with the fewest number of ingredients.  Only 4 ingredients with this one, and Josh seemed to like them. Going to try more recipes next week.

Also got my new glasses tonight. Looks like I have a weekend full of headaches as I get used to the new prescription and bifocal level.

And, the best news ever – figured out how to do the new design for my latest shawl project. I guess I just needed no distractions for about an hour. Hopefully my client likes it and it won’t take me that long to make it so I can get onto the next project.

Always a new project. Story of my life.
